Softback binding is durable enough to use as a permanent binding solution while still being very cost effective.
Most universities require students to submit a thesis that it is bound using softback binding, and the type of softback binding that is required will depend on the preference of the university in question. There are three types of softback binding that are most commonly used – glue, channel and wire binding.
With glue binding the document is secured with a binding that is either glued or sewn. Softback channel binding is very similar to glue binding in appearance but the pages of the document are securely clamped by the binding and no gluing is needed. Finally, wire binding involves punching holes in the document which is then bound with wire through these holes. This type of binding is best for documents that need to be laid flat such as instruction manuals.
Just because softback binding doesn’t cost as much as other types of binding doesn’t mean there is any compromise on quality. Softback binding does not cost a lot of money and so is also a good choice for draft documents. The professional appearance remains, but if a second draft does need to be produced this can also be bound cheaply using softback binding.
